The location
The EBRD's headquarters is at Five Bank Street in Canary Wharf, a 26-storey building where the EBRD occupies the top 13 floors and Société Générale leases the lower storeys.
Canary Wharf is one of the UK's two international financial centres, alongside the City of London. It offers residential, commercial, lifestyle, and retail facilities with world-class infrastructure. The area has a daily working population of 120,000, with 150 major office tenants, over 300 shops, bars, and restaurants, and 20 acres of outdoor space.
Background
The EBRD moved its headquarters to Canary Wharf in 2022 after its lease at One Exchange Square expired. Remaining at One Exchange Square, where the Bank had been since 1993, would have required extensive refurbishment, disrupting staff and operations. After thorough due diligence, Five Bank Street was chosen as our new headquarters. This world-class building offers excellent facilities, reflects the Bank’s commitment to sustainability and reinforces our commitment to London.
Resident offices
Since its earliest days the EBRD has extended its direct presence in the countries where its projects are located. It has opened Resident Offices in most of the locations where we invest. Increasingly staff from EBRD headquarters in London have moved to these country offices, while new staff have also been recruited locally.
Our previous headquarters
Between 1992 and 2022, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) was headquartered at One Exchange Square in London, near Liverpool Street Station. The twelve-storey building featured a blend of modern architecture and classical proportions, ensuring easy maintenance and energy efficiency.
After its inauguration in April 1991, after months of searching for a suitable headquarters, the EBRD chose this location to reflect its modern, forward-looking, and efficient image. The building was large and flexible enough for future expansion and met the commuting needs of staff.
Before moving to One Exchange Square in 1992, the EBRD was temporarily housed at 6 Broadgate and then 122 Leadenhall, which was damaged by a bomb in April 1992.
Art
The EBRD's former headquarters housed several art works in keeping with its international character. Outside the Board Room stood a wooden articulated winged horse created by Christian Renonciat, which has now been moved to the new headquarters at Five Bank Street in Canary Wharf. Other works included tributes to Leonardo da Vinci and Nicolas Copernicus. A large metal sphere in the Bishopsgate reception area symbolised a world without frontiers.
