Although Latvia became a member of the European Union (EU) in May 2004, the EBRD continues to support foreign direct investment (FDI) and development of the private sector and infrastructure. Bank activities also focus on selective support to banks, the development of non-bank institutions, and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
